Cal-Comp Chooses Qualcomm’s Technology for Its Mobile Phone Display

Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm, recently announced that Cal-Comp Electronics and Communications, a subsidiary of Taiwan’s Kinpo Electronics Group, has chosen Qualcomm’s mirasol displays for its latest mobile phones, which are targeted for emerging markets.

“Commonly in emerging markets, mobile devices will serve as the primary means of communication, and so consumers will require devices that provide more battery power per charge. Qualcomm’s mirasol displays will also enable users to get the most out of their handsets based on being able to see their content clearly, even in full sunlight,” said Peter Pan, vice president of the wireless and telecommunications business unit of Cal-Comp Electronics.

Based on a reflective technology called interferometric modulation (IMOD), mirasol displays harness ambient light and require no backlighting, thereby consuming significantly less power. The reflective mirasol displays are viewable in almost every environment, including bright sunlight.

Product launch date and retail channels are not announced till date, but are expected to be out soon.
