203 Million Linux Phones by 2012

ABI Research has published a report that says by 2012, 203 million mobile phones will use Linux. Research director Stuart Carlaw said, "Linux in the cellular phone is not a question of 'if,' but 'when.'"

The research firm predicts that 76 million devices will have Linux as part of a real-time operating system replacement.

The study also delineates the dilemma that will be faced. The firm says that there still will be latency issues with real-time operating systems and a lack of real understanding about the total cost of ownership for Linux.

However the research firm is confident that Linux will be the next big thing in the mobile phone market.
