Genuitec has released MyEclipse Version 5.5 along with a new class of tools called SNAPs (Simple non-integrated Applications) that aim to ease Java development.
SNAPs provide a smaller and more lightweight presentation of the standard MyEclipse tools. A good example would be the DB Explorer. Genuitec has packaged the tools as self-contained RCP applications with native launchers and platform integration.
MyEclipse 5.5 comes with a new features like support for Eclipse 3.2.1, multi-product distribution of windows, visual Web desiger, screen-capture feature, database, Spring, Hibernate, Web Services and MyUML improvements. But, the top feature is SNAPs. Since SNAPs are covered as part of the MyEclipse subscription, all current subscribers will have access to them just like the rest of MyEclipse.
At present, SNAPs is only available for the Windows platform. Also, so far only four SNAPs have been repackaged:
- Image Editor (including a new screen capture functionality)
- Visual Web Designer
- Database Explorer
- XML Editor
Genuitec says it intends to add more SNAPs according to requests from their customers.
