Black Duck Software, a provider of software compliance management solutions, has integrated its protexIP/development 4.0 with IBM Rational Application Developer for WebSphere 7.0 and Rational Software Architect 7.0. It is part of the IBM Rational Software Delivery Platform 7.0, desktop products. Integration of the software compliance management platform with IBM’s development environment for Web, enterprise Java and Web services applications gives enterprise developers using the Eclipse development environment a fast new way to check code for compliance with hundreds of open source licenses as they work.
The integration builds on Black Duck’s past work with IBM, which started in mid-2005, when Black Duck achieved the IBM Ready for Rational software validation of protexIP integration for Rational Application Developer V6, and continued when Black Duck validated protexIP for use with the Rational ClearCase software configuration management system earlier this year.
According to the company, protexIP allows large enterprises, technology product companies and outsourcers engaged in geographically distributed software development to know the contents of their software code and therefore to help ensure compliance with open source and proprietary licenses alike. It streamlines workflow to allow teams of software developers, architects and lawyers to collaborate to protect software intellectual property (IP) and integrates into corporate software development environments that include source code management systems and integrated development environments (IDEs).
Douglas Levin, CEO of Black Duck Software commented, "Both the software industry and large enterprises understand the benefits of using proprietary, open source and third-party software. But companies have to understand which components are in their code and at the same time respect license terms."
Black Duck’s protexIP platform aims to create a work environment that helps organisations manage their increasingly complex software IP and licensing issues. By validating software contents, finding issues to be addressed early in the development cycle or well in advance of a due diligence event, and verifying license compliance, the protexIP platform helps companies reduce business risks, complete software projects on time and on budget and stay on track with their business plans, the company claimed.
ProtexIP is available in Asia, Europe and Australia. In the U.S., protexIP/development Enterprise Edition is priced starting at USD 25,000, protexIP/development Professional Edition is priced starting at USD 9,500. protexIP/sdk is priced starting at USD 10,000 and requires a base protexIP/development subscription.
