HP has announced three new ultra-portable EliteBook series of business notebooks including a 3-pound model, which is claimed to be the smallest and lightest by the company with a built-in optical drive.

The HP EliteBook series incorporate the latest Intel processors, solid-state hard drives and wireless technologies suitable for traveling business users. The Intel technology supports extended battery life and better system performance. The notebooks also support Intel Core 2 Duo ultra-low-voltage (ULV) or low-voltage (LV) processors for optimizing performance and reducing power consumption.

The 12-inch 2530p model sports a magnesium chassis and aluminum skin designed to pass military durability tests for notebooks, and follows the "aircraft-inspired" theme of its previous models. It weighs in 3.19 pound and sports an HP Illumi-Lite LED display which helps to improve battery life by up to 90 minutes. The notebook also sports a smaller 1.8-inch hard drive, which frees up space for the user to configure the system with an optical drive or a second 2.5in hard drive. An SSD option is also available.

The HP EliteBook 2730p notebook PC flaunts its convertible tablet design that allows users to twist and convert the screen by easy navigation while globe-trotting. In terms of features, the pen-based tablet includes a touchpad, tablet buttons, a jog dial, an integrated DVD+/-RW drive and an optional ultra-slim battery accessory, which boasts to deliver a battery life of up to 12 hours. The 2730p also comes equipped with a 2-megapixel webcam, business card reader software, an in-built HP NightLight that shines on the keyboard, a shock-resistant hard drive and spill-resistant keyboard.

The new line is rounded out with a low cost Compaq branded model. The HP Compaq 2230s is aimed at small business users who would otherwise be priced into a consumer model. The 2230s includes HP's 3D DriveGuard shock protection hardware and Windows Vista Business with an optional downgrade to Windows XP. This model offers a 12.1-inch diagonal widescreen display and a satin, reflective, black-on-black surface. This 4.07-pound notebook PC also adds support for built-in Bluetooth.

The HP EliteBook 2530p and HP EliteBook 2730p are expected to be available by early September for USD 1,499 and USD 1,670, respectively. The HP Compaq 2230s is currently available starting at USD 999.
