AMD, the world’s second biggest maker of microprocessor is launching its much awaited chip Barcelona next month.
Barcelona, a quadcore processor is AMDs’ reply to Intel that launched its quadcore duo processor last year.
AMD needs Barcelona to get its server division back on track. The company has been forced to cut the prices of its dual-core Opteron chips to compete with Intel's quad-core Xeon processors, eroding its profit margins when coupled with an ongoing price war.
The (Barcelona) Opteron 2348 and 2350 will have core frequencies of 1.9GHz and 2 GHz and will be priced at USD320 and USD390 in 1000-unit tray quantities, respectively. In October, AMD will launch the 2.2GHz Opteron 2354 with 95W TDP and a price of USD610 in 1000-unit tray quantities. |
