In a bid to boost the revenues of its ailing gaming business, Microsoft is cutting the prices of its Xbox 360 consoles. There were reports last week that Microsoft would slash the prices of its gaming consoles to battle Sony and Nintendo, its closest competitors.
Microsoft said that effective Wednesday it will trim USD50 from the price of Xbox 360 models in the US.
The most basic version of the video game console will cost US350 and its top-of-the-line Xbox 360 Elite will cost about USD 450. Microsoft's Xbox 360 video game console was released almost a year before Sony’s PlayStation 3 while Nintendo, the most successful of the three, launched its hugely popular Wii last November.
Sony recently cut the prices of Playstation 3 in the US and Japan in an effort to invigorate its sales in the face of fierce competition from the Wii and Xbox 360. Sales of PlayStation 3, however, have been sluggish due to its hefty price and a dearth of must-have exclusive game software for the consoles.
